The U.S. District Court ordered the Department of Homeland Security to release him after detaining him for more than four years. Sidley obtained asylum for a physician and political activist from the Congo who was arrested, beaten, tortured and imprisoned by the Kabila regime because of his political activities and his family's mixed ethnicity. He narrowly escaped to the U.S., where Sidley lawyers were successful in petitioning for asylum. Sidley obtained asylum for a client who escaped Kinshasa, Congo, and reached Chicago after he was tortured and his family members were raped, killed, threatened with death, and physically abused and tortured by the police. The Immigration Court granted the client asylum because of his past persecution and his well-founded fear of future persecution on the basis of his imputed political opinions and activities, his familial social group and his ethnic identity. Sidley successfully sought asylum for a Haitian politician who was forced by government officials and Aristide supporters to flee the country because of his political views. Karen Rickenbach, 41, was an administrative assistant in professional development, keeping track of lawyers' mandatory continuing education ..
